Thank you Agate for starting the January chitchat thread. I am wondering what everyone else is doing today. I just finished showering and doing my hair. I am going to fix supper which will consist of a small piece of pork loin, collards and black eyed peas. This is what we are suppose to eat, at least in the South. Do any others of you have such traditions? It would be nice to know what they are. I've got to go put my collards on and let them steam a while.
HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone here!!!Virginia

Is that a variant of hoppin-john? I have a recipe for that but can't recall if I ever made it. When living in the south, I heard about it as a New Year's tradition.
I don't know of any other New Year's traditions except for "first footing." When I was still married, my husband had a friend who had Scottish ancestry and he would always drop in fairly early on New Year's Day because he said that as a tall, dark-haired man he would bring the best kind of luck if he was your first visitor on New Year's.

Very interesting. Now where can I get a tall dark haired man lined up for next New Years?
The black eyed peas are just plain peas. I use to get hoppin johns at other people's houses when I was out all the time and being more sociable, but now I just eat the peas since I am fixing them myself. I am looking forward to leftovers tonight.Virginia

Have you thought about branching out and doing cats' teeth? I have a friend who recently had to put her poor kitty through quite an ordeal just having a tooth extracted at the vet's. It took the kitty several days to recover, with meds for pain.
Howie's easy-pull method--is that what it's called?--might have been easier.
I heard of a dental practice called Dewey, Pullham, and Howe. Maybe that last name should have been Howie.SPMS diagnosed 1980. Avonex 2001-2004. Copaxone 2006-2009. Glatopa (glatiramer acetate = Copaxone) since December 2020.

Howie is branching out into dogs? That is so impressive. Alligators and crocodiles have teeth that look pretty interesting too.
Today I received a jury summons. People over a certain age can be exempt, and so I'm taking that exemption. I noticed that if I had opted to serve on the jury, I'd have been required to wear a mask.SPMS diagnosed 1980. Avonex 2001-2004. Copaxone 2006-2009.
