Jingle, go to Amazon and search for "gnat trap". There were many, all types and prices.

Sunshine, all my drains are the old kind that uses a rubber stopper to close them off. I think I will plug them all unless I am using them. Thanks for the idea.

Howie, drains are a concern of mine too and I have gnats. I wonder if just keeping the stopper firmly in the drain is really going to keep them out because they're so tiny but I've been trying to remember to keep the drains closed with their stoppers.

Sunshine, I didn't know about the orange stuff you mention but I'm definitely going to look into it. There was an orange stuff some years ago that the building manager gave residents to keep drains from getting clogged. It was an enzyme preparation and I think it was a powder that had to be mixed with water. I do recall having to let it stand there a while.

Gnats weren't the issue at the time but it might be the same stuff.

EDITED TO ADD: I found something that may be similar. Comments mention that it got rid of drain flies.

Agate, I'll soon find out if the stoppers help. Mine are all plugged now, and that gnat trap is plugged in. Between the two, I hope to be gnat free soon.

Howie, I took your advice and found some gnat/fruitfly traps and am ordering some. I used to have something similar but ran out of them. They were VERY sticky yellow paper rectangles but because they were so sticky, there special metal holders for them so you could poke them into the dirt around houseplants. The gnats I have now aren't on the plants so much as just around, in my face at times.

It turns out it wasn't at all difficult to find someone, who hasn't read "Grapes of Wrath!" As you can see, we highly recommend it. It should be available in audiobook form, if that is what you prefer.

Hope everyone gets their gnats under control.

Thank you for the link, Rose! (I watched that program for many years!)

I think I'll try one of Rose's home remedies. This gnat trap I got on Amazon doesn't work. It's done nothing!!!

Hey! I grow carnivorous plants (pitcher plants) and brought several from the greenhouse into the house to combat gnats. Half a day later and gnats are gone!

Great idea, Linda! Let the plants eat the gnats. You get a nice plant and no gnats.

Howie, if it's a sticky-paper type of gnat trap, you might have to leave it there for a while before you start noticing any dead gnats but you will start seeing dead gnats stuck to the paper. (Apologies if that was too much graphic detail.)

This Old House was one of our favorite programs. Jim was Mr. Fix It, and he loved watching shows about home improvement.

                          Linda ~

Your pitcher plants remind me of the carnivorous plant in "Little Shop of Horrors." What is their availability? Are they rare, or can they be found in nurseries or Home Depot? Will they eat any insect, such as a mosquito? If so, I want to plant them in my yards, as mosquitos are our main insect problem. Every year we receive West Nile Virus warnings. A brilliant solution to your gnat problem.

                          Howie ~

Which method are you going to try first? I hope it will be successful. Be sure to let us know.

Rose, probably the apple cider vinegar one. I have all the stuff for that. But later. I just ate, and so it's quiet time for Sam and me.

When I ate tonight, I took a small piece of turkey, and put it in the bottom of the gnat trap to draw them in. I opened it a while age, and there were two gnats. But the big questions is, what kills them. A bunch of gnats could eat and live comfortably in the bottom of that trap. I think it's a gnat home, and not a gnat trap. I'll get more Raid, and put an end to their life of luxury.

Howie, you've really set those gnats up with a neat lifestyle, haven't you? They're really not supposed to just settle in and put their little gnat feet up.

Aren't there any gnat motels--where the gnats check in but they don't check out? (It was the slogan for a product called Roach Motels some years back.)
