Hello, my name is Niko and I have had hydrocephalus since I was three weeks old. I had my first shunt put in when I was six weeks old, and my doctor said that I was a special case and that they would need to re-write the medical journals because of me. My last shunt lasted 23 years, which as I am led to believe is unheard of. It took my doctors six months to figure out that my shunt was, indeed no longer working. I had severe headaches for a year. I slept for nearly twenty-four hours straight, only getting up long enough to eat a single meal before going back to bed. After my operation, I needed to stay in the hospital for a week because I wasn't able to eat, and barely had enough strength to get to the bathroom. It is now three years later, and my headaches have not stopped in that whole time (I was told that they should stop when my brain gets used to not having excess fluid on it because it had gone so long with the fluid building up. I have also had trouble eating ever since my operation. Most days, I need to wait 3-4 hours before I can even think of food (my record is six hours,) if I attempt to eat sooner, I vomit. Yesterday I was able to eat within an hour of getting out of bed. I wasn't so lucky today, and didn't eat anything for the first 3 hours of being awake. This has resulted in severe weight loss. When I asked the surgeon that performed the operation, he told me to wait before eating. Is this a problem for anybody else? If so, how do you combat it?

Welcome to BrainTalk, Nico!
We do have a forum here specifically for Hydrocephalus! Right now it's a little slow, but if you copy and paste your above post in the forum as a new thread, people would see it and perhaps answer.
There are also many threads on problems associated with hydrocephalus. You could browse through those and also the archives, which you can access from the top thread on the page.
To get to the Hydrocephalus Forum, click on this link: Only registered and activated users can see links., Click Here To Register... . The "+Post New Thread" feature is in the upper left hand corner of the page.
I hope you find something that addresses your problem as you look through the threads and I hope someone with experience with your particular problem sees your post and answers.
Once again, welcome and we're happy you found BrainTalk!

Welcome, Niko87!
I'm usually at the MS forum here but noticed that you are new here. I hope you will find some helpful answers.
I don't know about your condition at all but the surgeon's suggestion sounds reasonable to me. If you can wait 3 hours before eating after you wake up, could try waiting even longer? You could try 6 hours and then gradually work back to maybe 4 or 3 and a half hours?Last edited by agate; 11-05-2016, 06:57 AM.SPMS diagnosed 1980. Avonex 2001-2004. Copaxone 2006-2009. Welcome Niko :)Question: Why can't I post links or pictures?
Question: Why can't I have a signature, avatar, or profile picture?
Question: What's wrong with my account?
Answer: You are in the "registered users" user group. This group is very limited in what it can do. This will annoy spammers to no endJust keep posting once you have been registered for 30 days and have made 11 posts your account will be "unlocked".
It's really easy to put someone on ignore and it's strongly recommended that you do so with people who's posts you don't like.
Step 1 - log in
Step 2 - click on the "settings" link
Step 3 - click on the "edit ignore list" link on the left side of the screen
Step 4 - type (or paste if you copied and pasted it) the username of the person you want to ignore
Step 5 - click the "ok" button on the right of the screen
Easy peasy and will lower your blood pressure. One important note though, this won't hide quoted posts. It's an oversight on the developers part and it's not an easy thing to "fix." So if someone quotes someone you have ignored, you'll see the quote.
Alternatively when you click on a person's name and view their profile page, underneath their avatar, there is a option that says, "Ignore this person". Click that link and then click the yes button.
