Exercise and Stretch Thread: Jan. 2017

MS creates some real challenges to keep on moving. It helps to inspire each other on how to find ways to move. Did you stretch in your bed, swing your arms, roll side to side today? Or perhaps you did housework? Or exercised in a pool? Pushed the wheelchair wheels with your arms at the store? Post them here and we can egg each other on.

    How did you move today?

I surfed at dawn today. As hoped, the waves were so perfect, knee to waist high, pretty clean, warm air, minimal breeze. I content myself now with lots of paddling, and scoring an occasional ride.

There were two rides. The second was so perfect, caught it just right, popped up and rode it in for a very long ride. And the best part was all my crew both in the water and on the beach witnessed it along with some of the dudes. They woohooed it and fist pumped it.

Every wave could be my last, so this was very satisfying way to start the new year, and I am okay if that one was my last.

Sounds like a perfect way to start the year!

And it certainly beats what all too many are doing--waking up late in the day with a splitting headache and feeling absolutely rotten. Maybe they had a great time partying but was it worth it really?

        Oooooh...my aching head!

Just joking of course, but I love to read what everyone is doing to stay as fit as possible. Tomorrow, I'll make my usual dump, bank and store run.

I do use the motorized carts at the store. I didn't for a long time until I gave out and sat right down in the middle of the isle. Quite embarrassing at the time, but it began a special relationship with everyone at the store.

I have never been one to do exercise. Pre -MS, I was very active with working, and I've always had a "play" car. I still do. Working on those, and working, and taking care of the cats which I've always had was it.

But now, I just can't do it. I built Pinky while still at the best I've felt with MS. And I knew it would be the last "play car" I would ever be able to build.

Now days, taking care of my self, and my two cats is about all I can do. When I'm feeling especially good, I work on Pinky. The last adventure was the tires were low to the point I was afraid to try driving it. So I about killed myself taking one tire off, and getting air, and putting it back on.

Well yesterday, I ordered an air pump so I can do the other tires here in the garage. That took a lot of worry off my mind. Now it's getting too cold to drive, but when it warms up enough, RIDE TIME!

I guess the point is, like BBS, keep doing what you love, no matter how you have to do it. Don't let MS win.

Nice post Howie. I think too, I can tell where my future may be heading, so I want to milk as much as I can out of the present while I can still do some things I love, even if it isn't what I could do a year ago.

Howie, I visualize you driving around like this guy:

My average number of daily steps in December was 1568. On two days I goofed up and so it was figured for 29 days.

Too funny!!! That car dealer was scared to death.

Actually, I only drive the country roads that I know well, and I just drive like a normal car. But I HAVE floored it 3 times so far, and slowed down at 90mph. I've never had it floored through 4th gear. I let off at the end of 3rd. Not exactly a sporty looking economy car anymore.

Today was my best MS day in months. I swam a half mile with no bad effects. I miss doing a mile, but that is not in the cards.

A GOOD day! Don't wish for more, or less. Just savor the day. There will be more.

Well I spoke to soon. Last night my toes went spastic straightening out like little boards. I think I will lay off exercise for two days. And then cut back on number of laps.

But today I shopped a Publix 15 minutes without a scooter as they hadn't put them out yet. Luckily was no line at the checkout stand.
