Why immunotherapy should be the first choice, not the last resort

WHY IMMUNOTHERAPY SHOULD BE THE FIRST CHOICE, NOT THE LAST RESORT

    ((((((Hugs to All)))))) ~

When Jim came home from his Opdivo infusion, he told me that while his nurse was filling out his information sheet, she asked him, “Is this your first time here?”

He explained that he had 2 rounds of chemo, so that he could qualify for Opdivo. And during that time wasted on Chemo, his cancer has spread. Now, instead of curing him, the goal is to keep him alive a little longer, or at least stop it from spreading.

She expressed her displeasure with this protocol, “It’s so unfair and wrong.”

Jim’s nurse explained immunotherapy and Opdivo to Jim, which Jim then explained to me. Here is my metaphor to describe it.

    How Immunotherapy Works

Immunotherapy is like the Department of Defense for Cancer.

White Blood Cells (WBC) are soldiers, armed with the ammunition to fight the enemy, thanks to the Department of Defense.

Red Blood Cells (RBC) are the enemy’s soldiers, although there are RBC, who aren’t enlisted in the army.

When a WBC soldier meets an RBC soldier, the WBC kills the RBC.

Opdivo stimulates the body’s immune system to fight cancer.

Whereas, Chemo reduces the body’s immune system, and its soldiers kill off WBC, as well as neutral RBC soldiers.

“Why Immunotherapy Should Be the First Choice, Not the Last Resort,” is going to be the title of a letter I intend to write and send to as many venues as possible.

I welcome your suggestions for people/agencies/ organizations/ blogs, etc. to which I should send my letter. Please share your ideas and become part of the movement to change this protocol.

I don’t know when, but I will write about Jim’s experience, and those of millions of other Chemo Cancer Victims (yes, victims) of Big Pharma. It is inhumane to deny a dying person a chance at a longer life, knowing that immunotherapy will work better than Chemo. Knowing that Chemo will make the patient more ill, suffer tremendously with vomiting, nausea, dehydration, weight loss, anemia ~ the list is endless. It is ENDLESS. And knowing, that every day, every week, every month that goes by without immunotherapy allows cancer to spread unabated.

This is essentially a death sentence to cancer patients. It’s abhorrent! And unconscionable.

I’m just appalled that oncologists are okay with this protocol. Are their hands tied? They are on the front lines of fighting cancer. Why don’t they speak up for changing this protocol?

I said to Jim, “What about all the compassionate infusion nurses, who have to give you Chemo, knowing it won’t help you, will make you sick, and that you have to do it to get immunotherapy? That must be so very difficult for them.”

It’s simply heartless and cruel. And I am very angry that my beloved Jim is a Chemo Cancer Victim.

Jim’s nurse told him, “You deserve to live, and you need to live for Jon and Rose. I so wish this could have been started for you first.”

“First do no harm.” And yet, physicians are following this protocol, which is clearly doing harm. How is this being allowed? It must be changed, and I will be at the forefront of this fight, with what little energy I have remaining.

Jim could be in remission now, if he’d been given Opdivo first, instead of as a last resort.

For the trial study, Jim was asked to donate his tissue, blood, and fluids for research to help future patients. All the while, he would be waiting for test results as cancer consumes his body. And he couldn’t qualify for that test trial study, without failing 2 chemo rounds.

I want to help future cancer patients by eliminating this discriminatory, inhumane protocol, so that everyone has a shot at a cure and remission through immunotherapy and tissue testing from the moment they are diagnosed.

Chemo may still help some patients. But if we know going in that Chemo won’t help, then give it just to qualify for treatment, which is more likely to help, great harm is being caused to those patients.

Great harm has been caused to my beloved husband and the World’s Most Wonderful Dad, because of this protocol. And the harm caused to me and Jon, when we lose him to this protocol, will be immeasurable.

I’m ready to fight for change in Jim’s name.
